As I lay here sweating in my bed- unwilling to sleep without my down comforter in the summer and under the heat of my laptop- I am reminded not to complain. Why? Because I just looked at photos of the blizzard in Chicago this past winter and not a thing about the heat seems bad.
Snow Serious…
So apparently a bit of snow is coming to Chicago- which is probably really exciting for a lot of schools…but doesn’t necessarily mean a snow day for a young working professional like myself.
The good thing is -my responsibilities at this point in life are pretty minor -all things considered. I don’t have a car. I don’t have kids. My landlord’s contracted employees shovel my apartment stoop. I basically just need to make it to work.
However, I’m still pretty concerned about all the hyperbolic weather jargon floating around. So I took some actions into treating this like the blizzard situation it might be.
First, I watched the Today Show. Al Roker was nervous, but overall fairly pleasant in his demeanor. Al’s attitude is quite nice for the viewer, but can be deceptive. So I read some weather sites…like weather.com and weatherbug.com…both had some pretty disturbing graphics with Chicago at the center of this thing. I’m also not too comfortable with “heavy snow, destructive ice, tornadoes, and bitter cold” used side by side.
Then I had to think of a game plan. Stock up on canned goods. Aka go to Whole Foods after work. Then I realized I don’t have any snow boots that extend past my ankle. No ones fault but my own. So I called around and got some Hunter’s. Done.
Turns out the wind on Michigan Ave was pretty bad to the point where I couldn’t shut my cab door. So no more grocery store. I went to my favorite corner store…7-11. I love buying local. I really hope two tombstones (one cheese -one roni …for variety) and a jar of Jif will be what I need to get through this storm.
Lastly, if I were to lose power. I’ll just call my landlord- who should be able to help immensely from Puerto Rico.
Fingers crossed.
